Savandurga: The 80km Endurance Trek on Asia's Monolith Hill & A Surprise Village Festival Feast | Chapter 128 (May 21, 2016)

Place: Savandurga Trek.
Distance: 40 x 2 = 80kms.
Directions: Bengaluru – Kengeri - Big Banyan - Manchinebele - Savandurga
Particiapants: Dileep (Koof/Isro) > Madhu (Braca) > Karthik (Sp).
Bikes:  Thunderbird > Pulsar

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
This was one the endurance tester kind of trips. A normal hike was turned into a military training pushing our bodies back into life from the dead grave into which it was forcibly driven. Ending the trek in a festival flooded town with free dishes and drinks was something new we experienced on this chapter. (And without a smart phone planning was much more simple, you can take my word on this! – just call and inform and head out, Ashte:P)

INTRO & PLAN:
IT had been 4 days since our trip to Muthathi, a much needed steam release I must say, so wanted to push another one for this month. It had been 4 months since our previous trek to Bhasmangi Fort. Body had rusted pretty bad, so suggested Savandurga. But it was turned down as it was hot and most of us wanted to swim (including me!) So, Mahadevpura it was, reminding us of the year back funny trip we had taken. Dilip, Madhu & Dhanush were on the confirmed list.
TIME: 22:00 (20/5/2016)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up at 05:00, did a few crunches & cycling, had a cup of hot water & lemon and was all set to go. The meet up was scheduled at our at Decathlon, Mysore road. So left my home to pick Madhu and waited for the other two on SH-17. As Dany couldn’t make it it was only Dilip who came. Once all three were there, Madhu said he wanted to be back by noon. So we decided that he decide the place. Finally it was back to the original thought in mind. Savandurga it was.
TIME: 07:45

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Big Banyan Tree – Manchinbele - Savandurga)
This was approximately 45kms ride, an awesome one I must say. This route has always been dear to us as most of our initial trips were done on this route. Once we took the deviation off RRDC, the roads turned silent. We headed at a very smooth pace riding beside each other in the cool weather. Once we reached Big Banyan, we pulled over at a new hotel for breakfast.
TIME: 08:15

After a yummy breakfast we had a refreshing tea outside and headed further. In a few minutes into the ride, we could spot the hillock shining and blazing under the morn sun. As we rode on, we witnessed the “first glimpse” of the Manchinbele and pulled over for a couple of minutes.
Once we entered into the Savandurga forest premises, the ride flourished even more. The roads narrowed and the greenery increased, the noise reduced.  The air felt real fresh and got us going  peacefully to reach the base of the hillock.
TIME: 09:30

SAVANADURGA:
Well, as a festival was about to commence for the day, the town was flooded with people. Initially it made me restless, but we found a place to park our bikes, awakened the goat’s spirit within usand we began the ascent.  This climb was a different one , as Madhu wasn’t used to hill climbing, Dilip had worked excessively on his legs the previous day and his legs were worn out and me, well i had rusted from the break I had taken to kill the summer heat. So, this ascent of the hill meant a lot to us. Like always I have divided the climb into the following sections, keep up with me here.

i) To the first fort wall
ii) To the second fort Wall
iii) On the second fort wall
iv) Final Stretch
Well, grab something to eat, drink, sit back and enjoy the hike.

i) To the first fort wall:
Initial part of the trek was through the small mud path which ran in silence amidst the green bushes. Once we made it out mud path, the steep magnificent rock face stared back right into our faces. The blue wavering skies backing it up as well. We initially chose the steep route but we soon turned to the normal route as our initial plan was a swim and we weren’t exactly prepared.  But this switch over meant we had to walk sideways on the super inclined wall and this took a major toll on our ankles.
TIME: 10:15

ii) To the second fort wall:
We rested quite some time at the first for wall. Our ascending pace during the second stretch drastically reduced.  As we began climbing up towards the second fort wall a beautiful scenery began to emerge behind us. Manchinebele started to reveal itself amidst all green thick forest. IT was a breath taking sight and got us pumped up. With a few naps on the rock and some hard pushing we made it to the second fort wall.

iii) Fort wall walk:
The third stretch was a decent one .  We got on top of the fort wall and kept walking on it. Once the fort wall ended we were standing in front of another rock face. By now, Dilip & Madhu had started cursing and swearing at me big time, whole heartedly as well haha. Dilip’s leg had hit the bucket and it was failing to carry him any further, but with enough pushing as we climbed up another scenery emerged. TG reservoir another beautiful water body could be spotted along with Manchinebele.

iv) Final Stretch:
Once we were done with the third stretch, we hit flat ground for a change and a few ruined outposts. We grabbed a litre of water and shared it among us. But as we continued a little further we could spot the Nandi and pushing through the final stretch we made it to the top.
TIME: 11:45

TOP:
Once we reached the top, said “hi” to the quiet Nandi which sits on top of the hillock. Then rang the bell thrice and after exploring the place, we sat down enjoying the breeze for a while before we dozed off. After about 15-20mins we awoke fresh and rang the bell thrice again and was all set to climb down.
TIME: 12:30

DESCENSION:
The descend was pretty neat, with a few incidents.  It took us 1h to descend. As we left the top, we covered the top two stretches pretty quick. And as the festival was in full swing we could hear the drum beats way up to the top and we began dancing our way to the bottom. We could feel our knees and thigh muscles put into work. It felt good, no great. The decension was pretty much non-stop we made it town.
TIME: 13:30

FESTIVAL:
Trust me, this part of the trip completely was new and blew us away. As we entered the town, the festival was in full swing. People came running and offered us free “Panka”, “Buttermilk” and various kinds of dishes.  Why are we being treated so nice, we thought. Nevertheless we gobbled up a few dishes here and there and drank almost till our neck. Unwillingly we left the color flooded town.
TIME: 14:00

RIDE 2: (Savandurga – Manchinebele – Bangalore)
After a treat at the Savandurga. We rode back in the same route until Manchinbele, from where we took a deviation and landed up at our regular dhaba at Bangalore University.  Madhu stayed for a short while as he had other plans. Dilip and me sat leisurely and left the dhaba afloat after 1-2hrs to reach back our respective houses.
TIME: 17:15

CONCLUSION:
"Well, this, was an all out war against my strained diaphragm. And guess what, it held pretty well and actually set it free. Koof proved he's one tough player by pushing through till the end inspite of his strained legs. And well Madhu, showed unusual enthusiasm to hike uphill, which i must say was very surprising (and kind of funny):P"

Until next time, Cia \m/

Manchinbele Dam & Nelligudde Kere: The 80km Peaceful Ride to Break the Hiatus at the Sparkling Water Bodies | Chapter 117 (Nov 1, 2015)

Place: Manchinbele Dam & Nelligudde Kere.
Distance: 40 x 2 = 80kms.
Directions: Bengaluru – RRDC – Manchinbele – NG Lake - Bidadi
Particiapants: Arun (Aaku Bhai) > Karthik (Sp).
Bikes:  Unicorn > Pulsar
Previous visit: BananthimariBetta Trek

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
This was a short, but much needed elixir. The M/C  was almost on the verge of extinction when it came to tripping, then came Arun to pull me out. Even though it was small ride it broke the shackles and let us free like we were meant to be. And this trip also justifies the fact of going to repeated places ain’t always a bad idea.

INTRO & PLAN:
I had not been on the road for 3months. I was beginning to get rusty and my mind was getting blocked. With all the procrastinations and delays I was getting frustrated. Finally Arun and myself agreed to go out and just ride, even if it meant a small 30kms stretch. First Sunday of November was picked with the two of locked in.
TIME: 22:00 (30/10/2015)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up at 05:00, did a push ups & sit-ups, had a cup of coffee and sat back. Parents were confused never had I taken this long break from the road they felt happy & sad I guess. Arun arrived at my place at about 08:45 and we left Bangalore.
TIME: 09:00

RIDE 1: (Bangalore- RRDC – Big Banyan – Manchinbele – NG Lake - Bidadi)
This was about a 70kms total ride. We first got out of the city and cruised towards RRMC via Kengeri. After making to RRDC we took a right turn and headed towards Big Banyan. The roads had turned silent and greenery was up on both sides of the road.
We pulled over as I wanted to take in the fresh air I had missed all these months. It actually felt refreshing and good. Even though Arum & me kept meeting for walking every weekend, we always speak on quite a different wave length on the road.
After a few minutes into the ride, we could spot the beautiful Savandurga. Continuing further we reached the beautiful Manchinbele.
TIME: 08:00

MANCHINBELE:
The first glimpse like always took my breath away. We parked our bikes on the road itself as we had no intention of going till the waters. Started at the glittering waters for some time remembering our second chapter. I asked Arun whether he had visited NG lake. When the reply was negative one. We took off from Manchinbele, rode a few kilometres back and headed towards NG lake.
Riding in between grass fields and a lot of villages we made to the second water body, which also was sparkling. We took out bikes on the bund, got off it and admired the morning fresh air.
TIME: 08:30

NG LAKE:
We spent a 15-20mins at this place, walking on the bund. It wasn’t surprising to find nobody on a Sunday as many know about the place. After which we headed towards Bidadi and pulled over at our regular hotel for some Idly & Vada.
The breakfast tasted damn good, as it had been our choice of food since many years. After having breakfast we turned back on the SH-17 to ride smooth to reach back our respective homes. The shackles, my friends, had been broken! Time to let loose :P

Savandurga Trek: The 80km "Reckoning Day" Ascent of Asia's Largest Monolith, Conquering the Steep First Fort Wall in the Rain | Chapter 82 (Aug 16, 2013)

Place: Savandurga & Manchinbele Dam.
Distance: 40 x 2 = 80kms.
Directions: Bengaluru – RRDC – Big Banyan – Manchinbele – Savandurga
Participants:  Gowrish (Dowrisha) > Srinidhi(Nidhi) > Srihari(Hari) > Andreas > Samuels > Sukesh (Actually) > Karthik (Sp).
Bikes: Pulsar.
Previous visit: Maddur & Kanva - Restart.

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
Savandurga (~4000 feet) is the largest monolith of Asia. Hiking the tallest monolith was a pure bliss. But this is one of the few chapters in which I felt the pressure, which I feel is unessential as it wastes pure vital energy called passion. But yeah overall we kicked some mighty ass to conquer the hillock.

INTRO & PLAN:
So, a couple of our friends from Swiss had arrived in Bangalore. So we were requested to take them to Mysore. But then I felt it would be better to take them for a hike. But yeah, it meant a whole new level of responsibility to get them back in one piece. The crew was a whole new set. After we exchanged our numbers on the previous day, I sat down and formed a plan as I felt it was needed this time. (to show I trip on regular basis :P)
TIME: 22:00 (15/8/2013)

ASSEMBLE:
To be frank here, I couldn’t sleep for most of the night. I was up at about 02:00 looked at the planned schedule, made a few changes to the timeline and sat back looking at the board. The only thing that was running through my mind was the safe hike of the crew. At about 06:15, Sukesh arrived at my place. We left my place on one bike, my bike. We reached the NICE road junction at Mysore road, where the others were scheduled to meet us both.
TIME: 07:00 hrs

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – RRDC – Big Banyan – Manchinbele)
After about 15mins of waiting we got a call informing us that the other group had encountered a flat tyre and were on the task of fixing it. After nearly an hour’s wait the whole crew had assembled. I went over to the non-driver seat and started explain the day’s plan with the notion that I was speaking to Nidhi. After listening patiently to the entire plan the person whom I was addressing said that Nidhi was on the other side :P Damn, they are look-like twins. We had a good laugh and yes the plan was crystal clear.
TIME: 08:15

We rode a few kilometres & pulled over at a hotel next to RRMC for some light breakfast. We had nice time explaining to our Swiss friends how to eat South Indian food :P

After a light breakfast, we left the hotel. As we reached RRDC we took a left deviation to continue towards Big Banyan. W reached the circle of deviation and took a left turn and as we rode on we felt weird, as though somebody familiar was riding beside us. When turned around it was Dowrisha riding, he had never confirmed his coming on the trip, nor had he informed anything, out of the blue, there he was, riding next to us. He looked at us and spurted out his signature dialogue “Yenno lo!!”. Sukesh & I looked at each other and burst into laughter. It was not long before we reached the beautiful reservoir Manchinbele.
TIME: 09:30

MANCHINBELE:
Like always, without a doubt , the first glimpse of  this incredible reservoir took everybody aback. Yes including me. It was indeed a beautiful view I still wondered whether this place existed so close to Bangalore. We spent a good 15mins at this place totally mesmerized by the reservoir. Then we realized it was a better to move on & finish of the trek as we could clearly smell the rains arriving post-noon.
TIME: 10:00

From Manchinbele, Savandurga is about 10kms. But the route is through a forest region & the road is pretty screwed up. After riding at a slow pace through the forest we reached the base of the mighty hillock. With the mountain goat’s spirit awakened within me I was ready to lead the team for a change.
TIME: 10:30

SAVANDURGA:

Ascension:
The ascension of the hillock took us almost exactly an hour. And it fun filled hike, as Dowrish’s non-stop chattering and jokes lit the air with laughter. This trek is one of the most scenic treks around Bangalore. The twin reservoirs (Manchinbele & TG Dam) can be seen as you ascend this hillock. I have divided the ascension into 4 parts viz.,
i) First Fort Wall
ii) Second Fort Wall
iii) Puddle Stretch
iv) Final Stretch

First Fort Wall:

This stretch was roughly for about 10-15mins. The first wall can be seen from the base clearly. But it is the steepest part of  the entire climb. We were a total of 7 of us, the weather was cool, the soft rays of the sun began to hit the our back before touching the rocky surface of the hill.
The trek to the first fort wall, I could see, had drained out most of the energies of the crew. So we rested atop the fort wall, sipping water and having some choclates.
TIME: 10:40

Second Fort Wall:

This took roughly 30mins, as we had had crashed into a canopy for 15-20mins. As we left the first fort wall our knees began to recover as the steepness reduced. The sun’s rays had intensified striking our heads directly. So, in order to prevent dizziness while climbing up, we went into a canopy waiting for the clouds to cover the sun. After a few minutes of rest we continued hiking towards the second fort wall. As we progressed the real beauty of this trek began to unveil. We could spot Manchinble and TG dam from a whole new different level. Immersed in the beauty of which could be seen all around we reached the second fort wall.
TIME: 11:10

Puddle Area & Final Stretch:

From the second fort wall, we decided like last time to walk on the fort wall itself instead of walking alongside it. At this point of time the 7 of us were beginning to split into two divisions so had to keep the energetic one anchored so that the other would catch up. Then we encountered a lot of puddles, which seemed pretty dirty. The steepness was not much of a concern as we were totally loving the trek.

After reaching a couple of buildings on the top, we could spot the top. The final stretch was through a boulder filled terrain. This has to be my favourite stretch as the air which surrounded us became all of a sudden cool, which makes one feel really good during hikes. Finally climbing alongside the growing trees, we finished the final stretch to reach the top.
TIME: 11:30

TOP:

Ah, yeah, the top. As we reached the top, I first waved a big “hi” to the Nandi which rests on top looking towards Bangalore. After having enquired as to how he had been we removed our shoes and sat down in line sipping water and talking all kinds of shit. The hobbies of Swiss people, the various places for a hike in Swiss etc.,
After about 30mins the sky had begun to turn grey, realizing the rain gods would arrive in a few hours and it would be very difficult to climb down when he arrived, we decided to pack up. Wearing back our shoes, checking our bags we were all set for the climb down.
TIME: 12:00

TREK DOWN:

The descension was roughly for about 45mins. It was a quick one when compared to the ascension. The 7 of us one after another began the hike downhill. The trek down was enjoyed throughout. Dowrisha with his spontaneous and unlimited reservoir of jokes made the atmosphere a jovial one. Very soon we passed by the second and first fort wall respectively to reach the base of the hill.
TIME: 12:45

After reaching the base, our friendly dog guided us to the coconut shop, where we had about 10-12 coconuts to satisfy our thirst. Then we paid a quick visit to the temple. As we just about to leave, another group had arrived at the base and asked us the directions of the climb. We told them the required detail and warned them about the rains. After wishing them good luck we left the place.
TIME: 13:15

RIDE 2: (Savandurga – Bidadi)
The ride back was not through the route that we had come. We reached Ramnagar at a good pace after which the clouds opened up to shower us with rains. But we didn’t stop, we rode at a slow pace to reach Bidadi. our energies were pretty low & we were dead tried. It was not long before we pulled over at one of our regular Dhaba’s.

DHABA:

Ah, yeah it was a huge relief reaching the dhaba and settling down. We ordered something to drink and some good hot food. As we settled down the rains came down relentlessly. And I, gradually felt myself departing from within. After the rains had calmed down we left the Dhaba.
TIME: 15:30

RIDE 3: (Back To Road Rash Era)
It was raining pretty heavy, and the weather was awesome for a ride. But I, who was riding not like myself was pretty much hostile to myself. We reached the NICE raod junction bid adieu to the other team. After which we raged on like everlasting flame in the downpour to reach Nayandhalli, where, I believe I clipped a few mirrors (truly sorry whoever it was!! :P) Reached back home where Sukesh had parked his bike.
TIME: 16:40

CONCLUSION:
“OH yeah, this had to be one of those chapters where I truly felt the pressure. And all the pressure that had been built up found a perfect relief. After crashing at 17:00, I woke up at about 02:00 the next day, to find a few messages saying it had been a wonderful trip etc., Ate a couple of fruits, went up the board and erased the timeline I had written on it, time to move on, Cheers!!  ”

Until Next time Cia \m/
