Gundal Dam Ride: Slush, Riots, and Burning Tires Adventure | Chapter 178 (Sep 4, 2019)

Place: Gundal Dam
Distance: 150kms x 2 = 300kms
Directions: Bangalore > Kanakpura > Mallavali > Kollegala > Gundal Dam
Krew: Dileep (Koof) > Ashok (Momz)  > Karthik (Sp)
Bikes: Enfield > Pulsar
Budget: Rs 540/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
One crazy unexplored places around Bangalore. But the day of the trip was chaotic there were riots in Kanakpura and Ramnagar region due to the arrest of DKS. We had ride through slushy fields and get away from the mob and the burning tyres. One of those trips where we felt so much resistance to reach the place, one we reached it, all things fell in place and smoothness followed to the end.

INTRO & PLAN:
As koof had come from Nagpur for semester end holidays, we had met few times at Laxmi and then we decided to finish of the JD during a trip. Hence we first planned a ride to Gandikota and then we decided to head to Gundal Dam and finish the JD at Buyyandoddi with some fish fries.
TIME: 22:00 (29/8/2019)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up by 5AM, did a few push-ups and sit ups, all the physical training had kept me pretty good shape. Koof came to my home and parked his bike, we both took off on my bike to meet Momz at PES NICE toll. After formal greetings, we took off via the NICE road towards Kanakpura road.
TIME: 07:30

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Kanakpura – Malavalli – Kollegala – Gundal Dam)
This would have to be one of the most resistance filled yet fun ride. Every moment, our radar was full on alert. As we exited the NICE road, there were cops all around the place sending back 4-wheelers. We thought it might subdue as we proceeded out of town, and we could have never been more wrong. We fuelled up our bikes fearing the petrol bunks might close down. As we proceeded the weather chilled down but the smell of smoke in air could be felt throughout. As we were aproachin Kanakpura, my mouth started watering thinking of the yummy Masala Dose at Vasu hotel, but then there stood a mob of 20-30 people setting fire to buses and tyres and there was absolute chaos all around the place. Keeping a safe distance, we asked a few local auto drivers for alternate routes and then proceeded through villages and re-joined the main road after a few kilometres.

Breathing a sigh of relief we continued for a 5-10kms and there was the second mob blocking the road with a fallen tree and setting fire to it. So we took another deviation through the fields, but as it had rained, our bikes got stuck in the slushy mud and we had some fun removing it out and helping others who took the detour following us.

Finally after the ruckus, and shoes completely smeared with slush, we came out of the villages, it was actually very much fun absorbing the ambience of villages rather than blindly riding on highways. Anyway, as we entered the pipeline road, we were able to cover some distance, but at a slow pace. Then we heard at Sathnur both the main Kanakpura road and the Pipeline road had been block by a mob, this was quite frustrating. When we encountered the mob, who were still beginning to set fire to tyres and shit, I decided to give an unsual twist, went straight to the fellow who was setting the fire and asked him the best route to Kollegala. This took him aback, Momz was confused and so was that poor chap. Knowing where all the strikes were happening, he politely told us the best route. Thanking him we proceeded to reach Halaguru for some much deserved breakfast.
TIME:10:15

Sitting inside as we began our breakfast the shutters were closed as the mob had begun striking outside, we thought of the option of visiting any nearby place and returning or somehow reaching Gundal staying at Kollegala overnight and returning back the next day.

The ride after Halaguru became peaceful as we entered the Mandya District. No signs of any riots, hence we cruised along a bit fast to make up for the lost time. Saying a big hi to Shivnasamudra we cruised into Kollegala. Proceeding from Kolegala, it was time to test our memories of the route to Gundal.  Getting every turn right, remembering the solar farms, chicken farms we made it to Gundal in one piece.
TIME: 12:00

GUNDAL DAM:

Riding on top of the bund was a pure joy. The view you get to the left is simply breath taking. We decided to go and inspect the Travellers bungalow on top and then return for a dip in the waters. We reached the top of the bungalow and the view from here is simply magnificent. Taking the contact details of the Government officials, we thought we would swim first and then decide whether to stay or move back to Bangalore.

As we rode back towards the bund, the sight in front of us shook us. The right side of the bund was completely invisible with fog and rain and the winds were blowing towards us. As we proceeded hardly 5mins, down came the showers. We still rode on top of the bund and parked our bikes and rested for a few mins near the gates.
Then we decided either way we were getting into the waters, so doesn’t matter much if we get drenched. We parked our bikes on the bund and one foot into the water, koof came running back, we started laughing. Then I took a turn and then I came running back. Before momz could enter we pushed into the waters :P

The water was freaking cold and the skies were playing all along. Few moments of sun and few moments of rain. One point of time half of the reservoir was sunny and the other half was raining. It was simply crazy! After about 30mins in water we decided to head back out and return back to Bangalore on the same day keeping our fingers crossed. We called up the Buyyandoddi Fish place and requested them to keep 5-6fishes aside as we would be dropping by.
TIME:13:30

RIDE 2: (Gundal dam – Kollegala – Mallavali – Buyyanadoddi – Kanakpura - Bangalore)
The ride back was a flat 150kms, but with an awesome stop at Buyyanadoddi. As we left Gundal we knew we had burnt a lot of our time navigating the detours. Hence we sped up and as we did, down came the rains. It was not as intense as last time but nevertheless heavy, but we didn’t want to get stranded 15km away from Buyyandoddi and couldn’t rain as in the Ganalu falls trip, so we pulled over, buckled up, kept all phones inside and rode in the rain. Like they say “if you don’t ride in the rain, then you don’t ride!” but things eventually cleared up and taking a deviation from Halaguru, we stopped at a small bar nearby picking some sides, we sat at Buyyandoddi for the next 1.5hours as the rain picked up, the temperatures plummeted, the fish was piping hot and down it went in one smooth go!

Once we left Buyyandoddi, we knew we had few precious minutes of sunlight. The entire Mysore road was closed due to the riots. .Kanakpura road is dangerous after sunset. Hence, we had to make full use of the sunlight which was available then. So we rode at good pace pretty much non-stop, cruising past Kanakpura, finally about 15km from Bangalore we pulled over for a leak and then as the sunset in deep, we entered the NICE road and reached back home for some good Golgappas.
TIME: 19:30

CONCLUSION:

This was one crazy chapter, i mean considering the intensity of the ride. We had to constantly make PLAN B,C,D .. and it went on. The angry mob is never nice thing to encounter on a trip. But we kept options open and pulled the chapter off.
Until next time, Cia \m/

Kunti Betta Trek: Calm Weekday Mind-Flushing Climb (250km) | Chapter 165 (Feb 22, 2019)

Place: Kunti Betta Trek
Distance: 125kms x 2 = 250kms
Directions: Bangalore > Bidadi > Ramnagara > Mandya > Kunti betta
Krew: Madhu (Howle)  > Karthik (Sippy)
Bikes: Pulsar
Previous Visit: Kabbe hills trek
Budget: Rs 325/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
Alright, this was a kick ass trek which marked a start of a dominos of trips. Kunti betta even though a little commercial now, if visited on a weekday can be surprisingly calm and tranquil. Overall this chapter was fun, well-composed and old school like always! \m/

INTRO & PLAN:
I had/have taken sabbatical leave from office for 8-12 months. Was it a rash decision? Or was it cold blooded calculation? Or was it an experiment? Don’t ask me. Few things in life just has to be done, not all in pleasant manner. Now it was one of those times where I had centre my life in-between things that I value the most. The red bloody streak begins!

So, with no differentiation between weekends and weekdays, I almost felt I had figured out the fourth dimension of anything - time. Each day, feeling the same and sticking to a good yet flexible schedule consisting of reading, physical workout, meditation and hobby was paying off.
Freezing upon Medigeshi Fort, I asked around to see if anybody’s up for the trek. Madhu responded saying he was forced to take a leave and had nothing to do that day haha! Game on fellas!
TIME: 22:00 (21/2/2019)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up at 05:00, did a few push ups & situps, had a cup of coffee and was all set to go. Taekwondo was given a day off. Left my home at 6AM, made it Madhu’s home (which btw, is not a straight one road from my home, I want to make this very clear :P) picked him up and we were out of Bangalore. As i rode i joined the Mysore road and was heading towards Mysore, Madhu asked "hey u said medigeshi is towards tumkur road". I just smiled "Change of plans buddy"
TIME: 06:15

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Bidadi – Maddur – Mandya - KuntiBetta)
Okay, this about a 125km stretch on the butter smooth Mysore road. As we left Bangalore, we were surprised by the icy cold weather on the outskirts of the city. Bangalore had basically become a boiling pot, guess the traffic was getting horrible. Anyway, we enjoyed what the icy cold weather as we cruised along at a slow pace and pulled over at Bidadi for some yummy breakfast.
TIME: 06:45

After a yummy breakfast, we hopped onto the bike and took off once again. There was no hurry, so we cruised at about 60’s looking around and speaking all the way. As we crossed Mandya, we pulled over for a small tea stop. Post some tea and buying a litre of water, we proceeded further and took a right deviation near Up south correctly, and then got lost :P
We ended up near some canal, and asking the ladies who were washing clothes for directions we rode amidst farms and cattle we made it to the base of the hill.
TIME: 09:30

KUNTI BETTA TREK:
Well, as we reached the base, we looked at the school kids who were roaming out the class. Giving them back strange looks as to why they were out of class and making monkey faces, we ran towards the hill.

ASCENSION:
Well, the ascension took us 30mins this time. Investing time on martial arts had always paid off! And this time we didn’t sweat it out much as well. Kunti betta trek is very similar to Skandagiri, a long walk on varying terrains.  Ready for the trek? Okay, like always I have divided the trek into the following categories:
i) Initial Stretch – 10 to 15mins
ii) Wastelands – 10 to 15 mins
iii) Uphill Run – 10 to 15mins
Sooo, these were the stretches, let me run you through each one. Keep up with me here!

i) Initial Stretch:
To start things off, we had to make our way through few boulders. The path was quite clear on this one. But the background view is something not to be missed during this stretch. It offers a kickass view of a lake afar.

ii) Wastelands:
Once we reached the peak of the first hillock. There lay vast landscape between us and the final ascent. I wanted to spot the final ascent which had a clear pillar on top. But I was not able to. I concluded that my memory of the route was bad. But roughly knowing the direction heading, we explored two alternate routes. Pushing through the shrubs me made out of the second phase as well.

iii) Uphill run:
The final stretch is damn fun. It runs thorough the boulder terrain and we hopping from one boulder to another like knights on chess board. When a clear muddy path was in front we went running like kids with limitless energy. Finally about 30mins of climbing we reached the top of Kunti betta.
TIME: 10:00

TOP:
As we reached the top, I was disappointed to see the pillar pushed down and broken. Hoping the same would happen to the bones of the people responsible, we took out the water bottle and had a sip each. As I removed a complete packet of Mazello, Madhu burst into laughter. We had a few pieces each and began exploring the top. After finding a nice place for photography. We made into the shade amidst the rocks and rested for about an hour.
TIME: 11:00

DESCENT:
Well here’s the crazy part, the descension took us an hour. We left the top after resting for an hour. The climb down was smooth until we crossed the waste lands, then we decided to take an alternate route and explore some other route like last time. We ended up stranded and making our way down few steep phases we made it to the school to find the same old naughty kids outside. Cooling out heads at a water tank nearby, we filled up out water bottles and were about to leave. “Maga that’s some lunch they’ve got cooking for these kids, let’s go and ask if they will spare some for us too, smells yummy :P” i told madhu, he saw and thought for a while and then we decided to let the kids have it. We took off, with of course a nice trek in our bag.
TIME: 12:00

RIDE 2: (Kunti Betta – Mandya – Bidadi - Bangalore)
This was about a 150kms ride back to Bangalore. As we left Kunti Betta, I insisted that we take back the narrow mud route through the green fields and join back the road latter. As we rode at a slow pace and we pulled over. Standing on the ridge, staring at the bullocks plough the land, I realised I should be doing the same, but inside my head. Reach to depths and remove all the dirt & shit filled over the years from the corporate world. Make the mind fertile, innocent and wild once again. Madhu tapped my shoulder from behind and said “im hungry, if you don’t hop on back, I don’t mind leaving you here :P “ Howle!

The ride back was decent one, we took it easy as there was no hurry. We decided not to have lunch on the highways but instead go back near home have rolls like engineering days :) Reaching back RR nagar, we had some yummy rolls and lime soda near Madhu’s place and headed back to reach back my home.
TIME: 15:00

CONCLUSION:
Well, the mind flushing series has begun. And this was the perfect start. Kunti betta like always was reserved for special occasions. 100th trip saw it and now this. Last time I had twisted my knee at this place and was limping for weeks, this time, I was expecting something similar but guess all the elements wants the bloody streak to happen!”

Until next time Cia \m/

Gundal Dam: Fire & Ice Swim, Hidden Jewel & Buyyanadoddi Fish Fry | Chapter 157 (Apr 7, 2018)

Place: Gundal Dam
Distance: 150kms x 2 = 300kms
Directions: Bangalore > Kanakpura > Mallavali > Kollegala > Gundal Dam
Krew: Dileep (Koof) > Madhu (Gundu)  > Karthik (Sp)
Bikes: Enfield > Pulsar
Previous Visit: Doddagaddavali
Budget: Rs 700/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
Awestruck is the right word to describe our take on this chapter. Gundal is beautiful and serene reservoir located amidst the thick forests of lower Western Ghats. Hardly 15kms from Kollegala this reservoir proved to be a hidden jewel all these years. And to top things off we had our session at the legendary Buyyanadoddi fish fry, WOW!

INTRO & PLAN:
Weekday, I was browsing for few new places, when I hit upon this place. I was slightly confused and felt the google was fooling around. I mean it had been 7-8years on the road and we had covered a lot of places in an around that area. How the hell could we miss such an amazing place? So with my dear Laxmi friends – Koof and Madho we were all set to ride. This was the only time we had upto to PLAN E as we weren’t sure if the place would actually exist, if it does we weren’t sure whether water would be there!
TIME: 22:00 (6/4/2017)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up at 04:30, did a few push ups and sit ups, had a sip of coffee and was all set to go.  Called up Koof and Modho and woke them up. Initially the plan was to ride via Mysore road, but thanks to Koof’s last minute change we rode via Kanakpura road for a given reason you shall soon find out.  I left my home and while waiting for Modho outside his home, found 100bucks on road.. aha breakfast money set! Picking up Modho we met Koof at the NICE road junction at Kanakpura and left from Bangalore.
TIME: 07:15

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Kanakpura – Malavalli – Kollegala – Gundal Dam)
It was quite some time since we had started off on NH-209. It felt good and weird at the same time. Cruising through the snake way, we kept a decent pace. As we approached Kanakpura we pulled over at one of the super hotel – “HOTEL VAASU” the reason why we had chosen Kanakpura road over Mysore road.
TIME: 08:30

Belting 3 rounds of breakfast, and tummy completely satisfied with the awesome dosas and bath we left the hotel and resumed our journey. The ride was smooth and straight forward. To be frank it took me back to the days of Shivanasamudra, Talakdau, BR Hills, MM Hills days during engineering time. Not to forget the crossing the river on a coracle with our bikes on it hehe.

We cruised past Gaganachukki and Barachukki and entered the Kollegala limits.  The first canal of the Shivanasamudra was running dry and it pretty much left us low. Asking the locals for directions, we proceeded towards Gundal. Being harldy 12kms from Kollegala, we reduced our speed and had a good look around. The final stretch to Gundal had lots of solar panels kilometres together and on the other side of the road were chicken farm. Finally we reached Gundal and a huge bund wall was in front of us, not knowing what is on the other side was giving me butterflies in my tummy. As the bike good go on top we raced away to the top of the bund to get the look.
TIME:11:00

GUNDAL DAM:
My God! What a view we received. Whoo.. it was a huge relief that there was water and the place looks awesome! We rode all the way to the end mesmerized by the view the dam offered us. We went up to the IB which was being constructed and got a clearer view of the entire place. We rode back down to the bund and we decided to get into the water.
TIME:11:30

The waters were freaking cold and the sun was right on top of our head. It was like fire and ice effect. The waters were crystal clear and being in the waters koof and modho were picking on me as to why I didn’t search this place before haha! Also, please note the waters turn deep in a short distance. After an hour of swimming we decided to bask in the sun to dry up and shortly we left the place still awestruck!
TIME: 12:30

RIDE 2: (Gundal dam – Kollegala – Mallavali – Buyyanadoddi – Kanakpura - Bangalore)
The ride back was a flat 150kms, but with an awesome stop at Buyyanadoddi. As we began our ride, we knew it would be hard as we had taken a dip in the waters. We rode pretty much non-stop until Mallavali picking up a bottle of water we proceeded towards Kanakpura. At Halguru, we took a left turn and headed towards the legendary fish fry stop at Buyyanadoddi. As we arrived the fish were just being prepared on the tawa, so we decided to head out and get ourselves some kottu so that we could crash for some time. Once the fish arrived the session began and it went to a couple of hours. Whew! Awesome it was, finally paying them a lot of courtesy and respect we left the place afloat.
TIME:16:00

Riding back towards Bangalore, we stopped one last time again for the day at Hotel Vaasu to get a Masala Dosa into our system. Yummy! After which we rode non-stop and pulled over at NICE road. Koof went ahead through the city Modho and me took the NICE road.
No not yet over, on the NICE road as we approached towards the Shanmukha temple we were watching out for a place where we could get Modho off , this is when another Pulsar at 90+kmph slammed into my hand (had held my hand on sides of the handle). Right fist was numb, but dropped Modho back home and reached my home with a numb right fist hehe.
TIME: 18:30

CONCLUSION:
Whata great chapter this was! Truly one of the top 15. Firstly we didn’t know whether the place would actually exist. Second of all, even though it would exist, what were the chances that water would be there considering the summer heat. Things paid off, cheers to that!
Until next time, Cia \m/
