Ganalu Falls Ride: Insane, Epic Monsoon Ride Challenge | Chapter 177 (Aug 21, 2019)

Chinmay riding the muddy trails into the Ganalu falls

Place: Ganalu Falls & Shivanasamudra
Distance: 150 x 2 = 300km
Directions: Bangalore > Bidadi > Channpatna > Sathnur > Halagaru > Ganalu > Shivanasamudra
Krew: Chinmay (Big Show) > Ashok (Moms > Karthik (Sp)
Bikes: Pulsar > Enfield
Budget: Rs 508/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:

This was one crazy trip, the main highlight of the trip was the insane ride back in on of the heaviest rains seen on our road trips. Ganalu falls was in our radar since some years, but had never had manged to tick it off!

INTRO & PLAN:

With waters being released from KRS dam and rain showers every day in Bangalore, thought it had been quite some time since we did a ride in heavy rains. So with only one objective in mind – “to ride in heavy rains” we set ourselves. Chinmay & Moms were the two on confirmed list. So, with no concrete place in mind we decided to meet at Bidadi and then decide.
TIME: 22:00 (19/8/2019)
The mighty shivanasamudra as viewed from the other side

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:

Yeah, I was up at 4AM, did a few push-ups & sit-ups. After a sip of coffee I left home towards Bidadi. This was 30km ride and boy Mysore road had changed a lot, but nevertheless had that charm it had since we first set foot on it back in 2009. Pulled over at Bidadi for some yummy breakfast.
TIME: 07:30
The best breakfast on a trip - idly and vada

RIDE 1: (Bidadi – Kabbaladurga – Halguru – Ganalu Falls)

Once we finished our breakfast, we cruised along at a decent pace on Mysore road. Since it was a weekday, the traffic was somewhat less. After reaching Channpatna, we took the country roads towards Sathnur. The temperatures turned down, the air became pleasant and oxygen rich and greenery flooded both sides of the road pleasing our eyes. We slowed down enjoying every bit of the surroundings. It was not long before we spotted, or did we spot? We could see on outline of the mighty Kabbaladurga totally shrouded in mist. She looked somewhat mystic and scary at the same time. Saying a big hi to my favourite hillock, we took a 30mins break in the fields nearby.
We joined the Kanakpura road as we reached Sathnur and continued towards Halaguru. At Halaguru we pulled over at a bakery and bought some coffee chocolates, honey cake, jamoon, lolly-pop and you know why :P

Chinmay carefully getting down the rock face at Ganalu falls

Asking the locals for direction we deviated from the Kanakpura road and the off-roading began. Once the deviation to muthathi was past us, the ride turned into a really chilling one. We saw a board which said “You are entering forest premises” But no guards, the roads were muddy and filled with gravels and stones, the vegetation on either side started turning thicker and thicker, not a soul around. Finally we spotted the rocky stones and we knew we were at Ganalu falls in the middle of absolute wilderness.
TIME: 10:45

Ganalu falls was dried up, but a very peaceful spot

GANALU FALLS:

We were slightly disappointed and confused as to why there was not much water. But the place was just perfect, totally in the middle of the forest with no humans for kilometres together. We started making our way down the rocks. The descent was steep and on sharp edged rocks. Cautiously negotiating each step, we explored the place and found a nice place to sit and light some stuff.
We spent 1.5hours joking, laughing our asses off and remembering college days and various other incidents. Finally we decided to leave as it had begun to drizzle and we didn’t want to get stranded on the rocks in rain as we had left our shoes near the bike.
After reaching the bikes, we took off towards Shivanasumdra totally in goom mode.

The might Shivanasamudra falls in its full fury

SHIVANASAMUDRA:

Shivanasaudra consists of two falls Gaganachukki & Barachukki. As the waters were in full flow in both the falls, people were prohibited to go near the falls. Hence only see the falls, admire it and return was the plan. We covered both the falls in about an hour as we were totally afloat. We had some tomato masala, nippat masala, churmuri and cane juice as snacks as we had plans to eat Buyyondoddi Fish Dry.
TIME:14:50
This is Gaganachukki, the first of the mighty shivanasamudra

RIDE 2: (Shivanasamudra – Mallavalli – Sathnur – Channpatna – Bangalore)

This was the rain ride and the highlight of this chapter. As we left Barachukki we were still feeling afloat. About 15kms prior to Malavalli we witnessed a sight that got us thumping and pumping but at the same time sent chill down our spines. We were riding in sun and warm winds, ahead was thick, black clouds all over the sky. We knew it, we were in for some buffalo mode riding.
We pulled over at Malavali, with all thick clouds all above is and winds were chilling and icy cold. We put all our phones into a zip cover, called up the Buyyondaddi fish guy and asked him to keep 4-6 fishes aside and we looked at each other and we were set for the rain ride.

Ashok and sippy, background is Shivanasamudra gushing in all its glory

As we began the rain came down mercilessly, it was so heavy there were no bikes on road. We cruised along at a decent pace until a point where wind speeds also started picking up, now this was dangerous and we took a call to pull over for some time for some tea. The rain falling down in full speed on the asbestos sheet above was rattling our ears deaf. Had never seen such intensity of rains.
After some light tea, we took off and as we rode on once my shoe, socks and undies all had drenched in rain, there was nothing to lose all we could do was keep calm, ride and most importantly enjoy it after all that was the whole purpose of this chapter.

Sippy bike next to a lorry tyre. Perspective changed after this picture

Even though the rain intensified, we kept a decent pace of 60-70’s gliding through the blanket of falling waters from the skies. Such a joy it was! As we reached Sathnur the rains decreased. We pulled over infront of Kabbaladurga once again for a small breather. Called up the Fish guy and told him we would not be able to make it and promised him a return soon.

We decided to re-join Mysore road as it was the safe option considering the on setting darkness. We re-joined back at Channpatna and pulled over for a second tea stop as we had skipped lunch.
Ride back from Channpatna was descent, as we approached Bangalore, we took the NICE road and exited near College and stood there was 15-20mins still shivering from the cold but what a great feeling it was.
TIME: 19:30

Local chats available at Shivanasamudra

The TWO incidents :

As I reached back home, camera had stopped functioning. I realised at Channpatna I had taken out the camera and put it my waterproof jackets pocket and then forgot to close the zip of the pocket :P. Kept the camera in a bag of rice and sealed it tight. And lo behold, on the next day morning it was working fine. Chinmay had lost his ring, and we didn’t know when and where, the rain ride had kept us focussed and it was quite disappointing. Once he reached home, he also found the ring in his pocket which we had searched earlier.
Sometimes everything just sets right by itself. It was quite strange two incidents I thought worth mentioning. Guess the rains were happy with us withstanding their onslaught.
Until next time, Cia \m/

Mahadevapura: The 300km Road Trip & 'Cooling Down' Nap in the Flowing Kaveri River | Chapter 142 (Mar 11, 2017)

Place: Mahadevapura
Distance: 150 x 2 = 300kms
Directions: Bangalore – Bidadi – Ramngar – Mandya – Mahadevapura
Participants: Deepak (Deefu) > Ashok (Momz) > Karthik (Sp)
Bikes: Enfield > Pulsar
Previous visit: Madakasira Fort Trek

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
This was a very good re-union of school friends to welcome the summer of 2017. Mahadevapura we had feared would be running dry and it was pretty much, but it had just enough of water for us to get comfortably down and have a peaceful nap in the flowing waters of Kaveri. It was a nice cooling down session to begin 2017’s summer!

INTRO & PLAN:
Past 6-8 months, Ashok was unavailable and we used to pester him every weekend from the dhaba. Finally since his exams were done, he himself asked if we could ride out and we decided a water spot would be ideal to get things back on track. Deefu quickly joined is too and the destination was mostly Mahadevapura. Yes, we had PLAN B as well because we weren’t sure whether water would be there at the place.
TIME: 22:00 (10/3/2017)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up at 05:00, did a few push ups & situps, had a cup of coffee and was all set to go. We had decided to meet at RR nagar arch by 7AM. As I proceeded towards RR nagar I was surprised to find the roads had narrowed down and the thus the traffic had increased dramatically. We used to always get out of Bangalore via Nagarbhavi picking up Madhu since a few months. So I proceeded and pulled over at Decathlon and asked the others to come to the same place. Once they arrived, we formally (for word’s sake) greeted each other and then departed Bangalore.
TIME: 07:30

RIDE 1: (Bangalore– Bidadi – Channpatna – Mandya - Mahadevapura)
This was 135kms ride on our hometown Mysore road. Keeping the blue blizzard at decent pace proved to be a herculean task haha. The dense traffic prevailed more or less 10-15kms post Bangalore. As we approached Bidadi it began to fade. We pulled over at our regular hotel for some tasty breakfast.
TIME: 08:45

After the breakfast we went out for some light tea. We discussed a lot of things. It had been months since we had met Ashok, so his stories (mostly funny ones) kept us entertained. As we proceeded we could really feel the air get hot a we cruised along Ramnagara and Channpatna. Waving Maddur a big hi, we pulled over after the town limits for some light tea again.
TIME: 10:30

After the tea, I told Deefu to stay back as the road after the high proceeds amidst fields and the twists and turns that exists to reach the place is nothing but a maze.  We rode at a decent pace and the grasslands were dry, the canals were dry. My hopes were going down every kilometre we travelled further. I told others about PLAN B and PLAN C (yeah had a third option as well!)
But then as we approached the Mahadevpura Bridge we could see a decent amount of water prevailed in the river. This lit up our mood completely. Even though less, it was fast flowing waters and I was sure it would be the perfect level for us to get into the waters. Proceeding further we reached the Anicut.
TIME: 11:30

MAHADEVAPURA:
The water levels were low ,but was pretty darn good enough. There was some construction work happening around the anicut hence water was left only through the gates. The canal was bone dry. So we decided venture alongside the river and find a good spot to crash into. After about 20mins of loafing around we did find an excellent spot but we had to get into a river for some distance and then get onto a boulder, leave our belongings there and then jump into the river. Once we got into the river it was little higher than knee but the force was like crazy. Goes to show how unsafe it is when the river is in full swing.

We got in and found a sweet spot near a boulder and just laid down and allowed the river to keep crashing into our backs. We went on speaking for an hour so about school days , recollecting some of the fondest of memories. We tried to venture downstream but it started becoming a little deeper, upto until neck level and the force was pretty darn strong. Hence we made our way back to the spot where water was just enough and we floated in time. After about an hour or so, we got out of the water and dried ourselves up. Just before we left, I had a little bit of juice in my bag we gulped it down and started our way back to the main road.
TIME: 14:30

RIDE 2: (Mahadevapura – Mandya – Ramnagara – Bangalore)
This was the 135-150kms ride back.  As we just left Mahadevapura, we challenged Ashok to take us back to the main road. Each deviation he took correctly was marked as a 1-pointer and a wrong one would loose him the same amount of points. To our surprise, he took 5/6 deviations right and missed out on the 3rd one (the same one when Dilip and me had got wrong and ended up at PES mandya – Mahadevpura the Wrong turn) Reaching back the highway we pulled over at our regular dhaba for some drinks and lunch.
TIME: 15:00

After a good hour or so, we left the dhaba afloat. From here it was smooth sailing on Mysore road. As the sun had begun to set the darkness had come over and we pulled over at Ramnagara for some hot tea. After which we continued forward through Bidadi and pulled over just before kengeri at the NICE road deviation. Thanked both Deefu and Ashok for making it and we split our ways to reach our respective homes.
TIME: 19:00
Until next time Cia \m/

KRS Backwaters & Venugopala Swamy Temple: The 300km Ride to an Architectural Marvel & A Slashing Rain Journey Home | Chapter 131 (Jun 24, 2016)

Place: KRS Backwaters (Blue Lagoon) & Venugopalasawamy temple (VGS temple, Mysore)
Distance: 150kms x 2 = 300kms
Directions: Bangalore > Ramnagara > Mandya > Pandavpura > KRS backwaters
Krew: Madhu (Barca) > Karthik (Sp)
Bikes: Pulsar
Budget: Rs 350/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
Amazing, amazing ride to these two wonderful places. Being on Mysore road for more than 6+ years, never knew about these wonderful jewels.  A brilliant sitting in the fields followed by the dip in the holy waters and then visiting the temple would be a perfect summary of the trip. Oh yeah, not to forget slashing rain ride back to home.

INTRO & PLAN:
It was 4 days since our ride to Vanivilasa Sagara Dam. Mom had told me about this temple and had asked me to visit it as it was an architectural marvel. Had planned 3 times prior but had failed every time.  Madhu asked whether I could take a leave on Friday, I agreed. Dilip & Madhu were on the confirmed list. Place was yet to be decided.
TIME: 06:45 (20/6/2016)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
Yeah I was up at about 04:30 as usual weekdays and did a few push-ups and sit-ups. The meet up was scheduled at 08:30 at Madhu’s place. Morning Dilip informed that he couldn’t make it. So had my breakfast and left my home to pick up Madhu & said sayonara to Bangalore.
TIME: 08:30

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Bidadi – Ramnagara – Mandya – Pandavpura - KRS)
This a 150kms ride on our home ground Mysore road. As we left Bangalore, I cruised at a slow pace speaking all sorts of shit. We pulled over at Bidadi for some yummy breakfast.
TIME: 09:15

After the nice breakfast, we stepped out for some tea. Then I asked Madhu if he was good to climb Kabblu or we settle in for KRS backwaters. Then we decided it would be better to head to KRS backwaters itself.
As we continued the cruise we spotted 3 Apache RTR 200 being taken for test runs by TVS riders. They gave us very good company for the next 70kms as we pulled over after Mandya for some light tea.

After the tea we decided to take the Pandavpura route as Madhu had been to this place through this route. We cruised along peacefully on the country roads waving at all the kids (and making monkey faces at some) who were on their way to school.  It was not long before we could spot the mighty Kunti betta, took us back to our wonderful trek back in 2014 – Kuntibetta trek.
Riding ahead further, Madhu kind off forgot the route and we were pretty stranded. We pulled over at Pandavpura and grabbed something to drink. After which asking the auto fellows we got to the deviation to KRS dam. Then we got directions to the backwaters, but we missed a turn and ended up at the front waters :P
TIME: 12:30

KRS – FRONT WATERS:
The waters were in front of the dam gates, hence I call it the the front waters. Here the waters were flowing and pretty peaceful. Even though Madhu was still convinced we take back the route and search for the place. I was insisting to head out into the fields in front of us and crash down in front of the flowing river. Finally we figured out some muddy route till a small pump house. From where we walked about 0.5km into the fields along the river and finally found a wonderful place to crash.

We spent about 1.5hrs sitting on amidst grassy fields enjoying the view. After which I got onto my bike, tried the kick lever, nope! then the electric, nope. I was wondering what was going on, before I realized I was sitting on a bullock cart hahahaha :P Then we walked to the place where my bike was parked and head out toward Venugopala Swamy temple.
TIME: 13:00

KRS – BACKWATERS:
As we headed towards the temple, we asked for locals for directions. As we cruised along all of a sudden Madhu’s head stood up like a gazelle and he remembered the route to the backwaters. So, we changed the destination and headed towards new destination to spot the backwaters drying out. This time I was hesitant to go further but Madhu convinced me to take the bike until the waters on the stony terrain.
TIME: 14:15

Once we reached the waters, took off my shirt and jumped into the waters hehe. The winds were so strong that it formed waves at the shore. The waters felt warm when compared the winds that were howling in glory. Madhu joined in latter and it was real nice floating away in the tranquil waters. After getting out, drying was a piece of cake as we had just stand in the open shore and the gushing winds did the rest. As we left we realised it was a defence training area and spotted a few outposts as well.
TIME: 15:30

VENUGOPALA SWAMY TEMPLE:
This 12th century temple (as old as Somanathapura) is situated on the opposite end of the backwaters. Even though we could have ridden on the reservoir bed we took the normal route to reach the temple. This temple my friends was lost and buried in the waters for 70+years, it was relocation to land began in 2002. The new site is about 1km from the actual one. The work has been going on around for about 15years and will take another 1 year to complete. But trust me, one of the most beautiful temples visited till date. None of the gods had been placed, but still the ambience of this marvellous place was simply overwhelming. Heard further from Gauti that the sunset at this place amazing too!

We went around the temple lost for words for the brilliant Hoysala architecture that stood in front of us. Not many visitors were present as it was a Friday evening. We spent a good 1 hour at the temple premises.  All avatars of the Vishnu, Planetary Gods, about 30+ deities surround the main temple. Outside the temple we pulled over for some very light lunch.
TIME: 16:30

RIDE 2: (VGS – Pandavpura – Mandya – Bidadi – Bangalore)
This was a 150kms ride back, but it saw some very intense second half. As we left told Madhu that we could pull over at Maddur Tiffany’s for some light munch. But as we reached the hotel it was too crowded so we carried forward. As we continued forward the drizzle started tickling us, we pulled over for some light tea. But after Channpatna all hell broke loose and down came the relentless rain. But we kept riding ahead at a slower pace. The winds got into the action as well making the rain ride really a severe, but nice one’! I just sat behind and allowed Madhu to do all the riding (poor guy rode his heart out!) Both of us were shivering and slightly numb due to cold bashing of the rain god. As we reached Kengeri, dropped Madhu to his home and I headed back and reached back my home in one piece.
TIME: 20:30

CONCLUSION:
“ this was an expected feather in our cap. To be frank we knew VGS temple was a beautiful, but had never expected it to be so calm and people-free. Also KRS backwaters reminded us of our old adda Kanva Dam.”

KREW:
Madhu – rode calmly and brilliantly back to Bangalore inspite of the rain onslaught! Also, guess it was just the break he needed from work!
Sp – was truly satisfied with the trip, uncovering another jewel in Mysore’s cap!

Until next time, Cia \m/

Gandikota & Belum Caves: The Epic 725km Two-Day Trip to India's Grand Canyon & Second Longest Cave | Chapter 129 (Jun 10-11, 2016)

Place: Gandikota & Belum Caves
Distance: 725kms in total (400kms + 325kms)
Directions: Bangalore > Chikbalapur > Lepakshi > Ananthpur > Gooty > Belum > Jammalamadugu > Gandikota > Kadiri > Bangalore
Krew: Dileep (koof) > Madhu (Barca) > Karthik (Sp)
Bikes: Thunderbird > Pulsar
Budget: Rs 2250/head

IN LESS THAN 50 WORDS:
This was an amazing two days 725kms, 2 day ride to the ancient caves of Belum & the Grand Canyon of India – Gandikota. Gandikota is known for the famous view of the Penna River from the red glowing gorge. But it does have a lot of history associated with it. Belum caves is the second longest cave in India. Also, it was come back 2 days trip after 3 years! (And all those years of watching Telugu movies, it was time to put the language to some testing :P)

INTRO & PLAN:
Alright, I had applied leave for my birthday as I wanted to spend some time alone (as in last time) on top of Kabbaladurga. But then, once Dileep & Madhu told they would also join, I planned for Gandikota & Belum Caves. I booked one room at the Harita Hotel, Gandikota. These two places had been in our bucket list for almost 3 years. Finally it was time to scratch them off and release some dopamine. And what better way than on a birthday!
TIME: 22:00 (6/6/2016)

ASSEMBLE & LEAVE:
This time had prepared a neat schedule (back of the brain I knew it would never stick, but atleast it gave us some clarity) and budget plan. Yeah I was up at 04:00, did a few push ups & sit ups, had some yummy bread omlet  & a cup of hot water and was all set to go. As the meet was scheduled on the ORR near Nagarbhavi, left my home picked Madhu and joined Dileep at the ORR. Together we left Bangalore.
TIME: 06:45

RIDE 1: (Bangalore – Chikbalapur – Hindupur – Ananthpur – Gooty – Belum Caves)
This a 325kms ride mostly on wide huge highways. The first 275kms is smooth neat ride. After which last 50kms was in total heat and it was damn tiring. Initially the ride took off in full pace as we made it out of Hebbal and onto to the Airport road. Once on the airport road the traffic existed until Devanahalli after which the clouds came upon us and entertained us with some light drizzle.
We pulled over for some hot tea. After which as we continued, we were awed by the sight of Nandi hills which was completely shrouded in mist. It looked almost mystical. We pulled over at a new hotel at the Chikballapur by pass junction for some breakfast.
TIME: 08:00

After a good breakfast, we settled in for some hot tea. After which we took off, the weather was just inviting. Dark clouds above with light drizzle made riding bliss. As we progressed there were hardly any vehicles on the road. Green mountains began to emerge on both sides of the road. We made it to Hindupur and spotted the deviation to Lepakshi.

Simple rule, during very long rides “Ride 50kms and pull over for a short break (needed/not  needed)” We did the same, as we began approaching Ananthpur the temperature started soaring and we could feel the raw heat being emitted from the ground below. We pulled over at a small shop asking him directions for a juice shop we went into a small village and grabbed some juice, water and soft drinks.

We pulled over at about 25kms from Ananthpur and sat on the highway for about an hour and finished off the drinks. Ah, it felt nice! After speaking about college and all other shit, we decided it was time to leave.
TIME: 12:15
As we left, riding felt extra nice. We decided to ride the next 75kms at one stretch. Making fun of each other we rode at constant 80-90kmph to reach the deviation at Gooty. By now the temperatures had soared to 36deg C. We headed into the deviation road and pulled over at a small hotel to belt the heaviest lunch I had till date.
TIME: 14:00

I was barely able to move after the heavy lunch. After all the juice, and then a heavy lunch made us uneasy and dizzy. As we left the hotel I notices Dileep’s bike was punctured. So we searched for a puncture shop and got it fixed. We could spot the Ultra Tech Cement Factory a few kilometres away. And boy, are these cement factories big or what. The other two that we saw were Penna Cement & Dalmia Cement works. We spent about an hour at puncture shop; I was beginning to get worried whether there would be time to see Belum Caves.

After having the puncture fixed, the roads turned bad and the vehicles on the road increased. It made riding a little tiring. After asking locals for the directions we kept riding until we could spot the words “BELUM CAVES” written on the hill itself.  We made it to the premises, bought the tickets and were all set to enter.
TIME: 16:00

BELUM CAVES:
Well, Belum caves are the second longest caves of India. It was discovered by a British Surveyor Robert Bruce Foote in 1884. The caves have been formed by the river Chitravathi which flowed in this region few years back. The caves stretch for 2kms long, but only 1.5kms is open to public. The deepest point of the cave is about 150 feet in depth. The limestone erosion by a natural flowing river brings out the true beauty of the caves. It takes about 1.5-2hrs to explore the caves on a weekday (less crowd). Some of the important places to look out for at Belum caves are:

1. Patalganga – spring located at the cave’s deepest point. The spiral congested stairs make the descent to this place a little tricky.
2. Kotilingas – A breath taking sight that include thousands of stalactites (thin rocks which hang from ceiling) that look like shiva lingas.
3. Saptasrala Guha – Caves, where in one can produce musical notes, by tapping on the cave wall with a stick.
4. Dhyna Mandir– A place where in ancient monks (Old Monks :P) immersed themselves in deep meditation

The caves are well lit and easy to traverse as the directions are clearly mentioned. But a few places the passages are narrow and going on a weekend might get you jammed in. There is also an excellent aeration system which keeps pumping in fresh air. One is bound to lose a lot of water, so carrying water bottles is something one must do. But trust me, it was a different world altogether and the experience is totally worthwhile!

We spent about 1.5hrs at this place and we enjoyed every bit. As it was the last hour of the week, we had the place pretty much to ourselves and we played around the caves and finally got so tired that we decided to head out.
TIME: 17:30

RIDE 2: (Belum Caves – Jammalamadugu – Gandikota)
This was 60kms ride, but had to be the best on this trip. As we left Belum caves the sun had begun making its way down towards the horizon. We looked at each other and asked if we could make it to Gandikota for the sunset? The roads were narrow but awesome as it ran between dry lands which had completely nothing. So we were two bikes riding in some desert ridden land and with the sun setting behind our bikes. The sun had illuminated the red mud and the skies remained blue, to add more hue the green leaves of trees wavered in the wind, making it feel like paradise. It was truly a speechless.

The sunset catching ride continued in full swing (without taking stupid risks ofcourse). But as the sun began to head down fast, we were just 15kms from Jammalamadugu (30kms from Gandikota) we realised that we wouldn’t be able to make it, but nevertheless what an awestruck ride it was! As we reached Jammalamadugu, I suggested we buy off all the juice from this town as it was the last town before Gandikota. We bought two full bottles and headed towards the Gandikota.
The roads from to Gandikota are filled with patches. And once the darkness had come over the sky, we reduced are speed completely and rode slow between nothingness to reach a fort wall, well this was the Harita Hotel. We were again awestruck by the outward appearance of this hotel. I had heard it was good, but this was something we had not expected.
TIME: 19:00

HARITHA HOTEL STAY:
We checked into the hotel showing the reservation confirmation (Yes, one must reserve in prior with 100% payment). We rode till our cottage and parked our vehicles in front of the cottage itself. We could hear turkeys and other animals in the premises. Finally we ordered a long list of food items and sat down at about 21:00 outside the cottage enjoying the cool breeze.

We drifted and floated with the winds that kept blowing, we had long discussions regarding ghost stories, rides, college life and what not. At about 23:00 it started raining as well. So we went for a walk inside the premises itself. After which at 00:00 Madhu & Dilip wished me and we started downing again (thank god no birthday bums) At about 00:30 we sat for dinner and finished off the rice items watching EURO 2016’s first match. We watched it till 03:00 after which we crashed.
TIME: 03:00

KICK START TO A NEW YEAR! :
I was up by 04:45, (yeah I know, I know, highly insomniac) I went outside for a walk. Got onto the terrace and could see the sun making its way to the sky. Then I loafed around the premises and spoke to the dogs that had accompanied our last night’s party. After which I woke both Dileep & Madhu and asked them whether they wanted to see the sunrise. Madhu came outside (with closed eyes, note this point your honour) saw outside and said “yeah it is very nice, may I go back sleep now?” Hehe! there was no point in pushing him further. So locked the door and went to Gandikota, actually got lost, but explored the place and witnessed a beautiful sunrise. I sat on top of the red rocks witnessing the Penna river flow slowly. It was almost meditative. I must say a dream start to a fresh year. Finally after about an hour is came back to find these two still flat. I ordered some tea and sat outside. After 5.5hours of waiting enjoying the outside breeze finally Isro and Madhu woke up and we decided to go to the fort.

GANDIKOTA FORT:
Well like Belum, I will just list out the places to watch out for at this place as well. This fort is situated on the Penna River and was constructed by Kakarajum.  In the latter years it came under Tippu Sultan and Hyder Ali. Once the British defeated Tippu, all the cannons of these forts were melted and the iron was exported to England. The fort has 101 towers which were used to fire at the invaders.  Few of the important places at Gandikota include

1. The Doors – The doors of the fort are huge and have huge iron knobs. The entrance also has the 90deg blind turns concept. This made invasion difficult.
2. House of the Drum – The drums were beaten the alert the army in case of invasion.
3. Charminar – A small Charminar exists a we enter the town of Gandikota
4. Jail – A Jail exists beside the Charminar, where in the prisoners were held captive.
5. Jama Masjid – This happens to be one of the main attractions of this place beside the gorge. A serene and peaceful place.

6. Red Koneru – The huge lake in front of the mosque. During wars, after a ferocious battle the warriors used to dip their swords in this lake and the waters used to turn blood red.
7. Granary – Building used for storing food and grains.
8.Ranganathswamy Temple  – This is near the gorge and resembles “Somanthpura” & Talakadu” Here we bought ice lollies as it had been nearly years since we had one.
9. Gorge View Point – The main attraction of this place. River Penna flows between the ridges at 300feet below. And the view looks simply majestic. It gives a calm and soothing experience when you sit in peace witnessing the sunrise (without photography ah!)

So, that was the places, what do you think? Worth the visit, definitely is, go pack your bags lazy bums! We made it back to the hotel at about 11:30 and then we were in dilemma whether to head back to Bangalore or stay another night at the place. After about half an hour of oscillating between decisions we finally decided to head out. (A prolonged good thing is bad right?)

RIDE 3: (Gandikota – Jammalamadugu – Kadiri – Hindupur – Chikbalapur – Bangalore)
This was 325kms ride back to Bangalore. As we left Gandikota, we rode to Jammalamadugu and asked the locals for a good local hotel and we pulled over at one for some nice heavy lunch. As we munched down, I told others the ride would get eventually cooler and guessed finally it would rain as we entered back Bangalore. (any guesses what happened?)
TIME: 13:00

After which we rode towards the Kadiri road, pulled over at a petrol bunk and re-filled our tanks. After which the worse of roads began. For the next 25-30kms took us more than an hour. The roads were a mixture of very smooth roads and no roads at all. By the end of this 25-30kms are fingers were in pretty bad shape. We reached a town, where I asked the other two whether to take a deviation to reach back Tadipatri and to join back at Ananthpur. Just then a bus arrived from the opposite direction from Kadiri. We asked the driver regarding the roads. Once he said the roads were good, we trusted his words and continued in the same path.

The roads to Kadiri turned out to be fantastic. It was like riding in the Wild West movies. A lonely single road that ran between desert like terrain. A few ghat section here and there made things interesting. Once we entered back into Kadiri, we pulled over for some fruit juice. Then we had a hard time reaching back Hindupur as the roads ran through a lot of small towns and the condition of the roads were pretty miserable as well. Dilip’s side-ways seating and finally balcony sitting was the highlight of this stretch.
TIME: 17:30

Once we reached back the highway, we yelled at the top of our lungs and we shifted gears.  We rode at constant 80-90kmph and as we began to approach Chikkbalapur the dark clouds gave way for some light drizzle and it was bliss to ride. After which heavy rains started slashing at us without mercy. We pulled over for some hot tea. After which the sunset happened fast and darkness came over the roads in no time. From here on I struggled to keep up with Madhu, who was riding the other bike. Finally from BEL, through HMT layout we reached Tumkur road at Gorguntepalya. After which we dropped Madhu to his home, settled the bills, and headed back to our respective homes.

CONCLUSIONS:
an awesome two day trip is all I can say. Never expected this to turn out so well! from sitting on the gorge alone witnessing the sun rise on a fresh year to sitting with friends on the divider, it had all elements in it, thank you guys!”

KREW:
1.  DILEEP: what a kickass rider and his easy going and cool temperament makes any ride smooth and memorable. His thunderbird with the modified handle was a more of a companion! Also, his ghost stories kind of shook us all up!
2. MADHU: as usual, the picking on each other, beating up each other will always be there with this big guy! His presence and jokes kept the spirits in a whole new level.
3. SP: was very, very satisfied with a superb run. And was very happy with the way his birthday was spent on the gorge half-tight :P

Haha, until next time, Cia \m/
